Match Report by Dominic Baltisser

After three impressive wins in a row followed by a rather disappointing home-draw against Infinity, Cantonments FC was hungry to prove themselves in their away-match against the so far winless side of Rago International. Although there had been an obvious lack of creativity in our midfield during the last match, Technical Director Eric Antwi Ofori trusted the same starting eleven again.

But during the first fifteen minutes, it seemed as if the Cantonments Players were paralyzed. The majority of one on one challenges got lost, passes and crosses didn’t find their target, and the defense, although we hadn’t conceded a goal in four matches, was insecure. Fortunately, keeper Nicolas Nimo, who seemed full of confidence after his impressive record, avoided an early deficit.

After twenty minutes, Cantonments FC finally woke up, passes became more accurate, and consequently they started to create scoring opportunities. And suddenly, the match looked as if we were playing power play, Rago struggled to free themselves and keep possession. Especially Cantonments’ left side with Salifu and Dodzi Ahiabu developed a lot of pressure, but Awuni and Dola Tetteh both missed two excellent scoring opportunities.

One of our weaknesses during the season so far, set pieces, on which the team was working intensively during the last week, was another source of danger for Rago. But Captain Commodore and Ababio missed the goal with their heading attempts.

Rago was longing for the referee to blow the half-time-whistle, which finally released them from pressure – at least for fifteen minutes.

At the start of the second half, the so far rather ineffective right midfielder Cobbinah showed his class with an excellent dribble followed by a powerful shot. Unfortunately, Awuni couldn’t take advantage of the rebound! After ten uneventful minutes, Coach Ofori was forced to make his first substitution. He took his so far most dangerous but obviously tired midfielder Dodzi Ahiabu off and brought experienced utility player Thomas Afrifa Ouadu, who made his first notable contribution ten minutes later, playing an accurate long ball towards George Awuni, who found a lot of space just outside the eighteen yard box, but was followed by the two center backs. He aimed for the right corner, but his shot got deflected by one of the defenders and literally rolled into the back of the net – a lucky goal, but Cantonments deserved it.

Though, whoever thought that Rago would now give up, was mistaken. The goal scored against them paradoxically seemed to give them new energy. And all of a sudden, their quick strikers found space and could make use of their abilities. After eighty two minutes, one of them found Andrews’ shoulder whilst entering the box from the right wing – he fell, penalty! Definitely a doubtable decision – and an excellent chance to equalize! But the shooter couldn’t deal with the pressure and missed, the ball went over the bar! The last ten minutes finally were an open clash! Cantonments didn’t make the best out of their counterattack opportunities, and as always seems to happen when you miss your chances, they were made to pay. After losing possession whilst moving forward, our left side was fully open. A long pass was played to Rago’s right winger, keeper Nomo miscalculated the ball and left his poles, one touch lob… Goal! Lucky but not undeserved, Rago International equalized and was extremely happy about winning a point against one of the teams playing on top of the table.
